  • The cause of the Xbox 360 e74 issue is mainly overheating. Due to excess heat building up inside your console's case, damage is caused to the internal components which results in various hardware malfunctions. One such malfunction is the e74 system error, whilst others are things such as the red ring of death.

In order to get your Xbox 360 fixed, there are a number of different steps you could take. One thing you could do is to send your console back to Microsoft to have them repair the problem. However, this method does have some downsides- firstly, you will have to wait a few weeks to get your Xbox returned. Secondly, if your warranty has expired then it will cost you quite a lot to fix your 360, much more than repairing it yourself.

  • You can attempt to remedy this by fitting an x clamp mod kit. This isn't too difficult a fix if you have fixed electronic products before but microsoft didn't make it easy to do. As superdork said it can be one of two things, the scaler chip or the GPU. If it is the GPU then it is caused by the x clamps not holding the heat sink on well enough to the GPU. The x clamps are basically large clips on the back of the motherboard that hold the heat sinks on, they do not do this well. As well as this microsoft used thermal compound that does not work very well. I have repaired a few xboxes in this way, one of these being a E74 error console. All of the xboxes i have repaired with an xclamp fix have survived but i cannot say whether yours will or not if you do, there is no certainty it will work. Luckily this fix is quite cheap, if you have the tools each kit only costs £5 off Ebay although if you don't have the tools it could be rather costily (although less than sending it to microsoft). If you think you could do this have a go, if the xbox is out of warranty and you have the tools may as well do it, if it doesn't work buy a new xbox (what ever you do don't send it back to microsoft, it is pointless for a similar price you can get a brand new one) Anyway i'm not going to explain the wholke process it is long and tiresome, there are many guides on youtube showing you how to do it from opening the casing down to fitting the new bolts. By the way if you do this don't use nylon washers, use spring washers or something on the heat sinks, nylon just heat up and expand breaking the xbox again.

    Hope this helps!

  • Are you sure your warranty has expired. MS has extended the E74 error to 3 years. Try unplugging the AV cable and then replugging it. If that doesn't work, try another AV cable.

  • Try removing the AV cable and using another one. Hope that it works.

If that doesn't work, then you have a scaler chip problem. In rare cases, it might be the GPU. Either way, you'll have to get MS to get it fixed.
