  • That photo is not very good. Concerts are usually dark with lighting that is more of a problem than help. In this case, some of the flood lights are aimed right at the camera. The shot was taken without a flash, which was probably the photographer's only good decision. However, there is movement blur due to long shutter speed. In addition, it is overexposed for the setting. Concerts are dark; if you don't get the exposure correct, it will look like they're playing in somebody's basement. The composition is dismal. Then there is the photographer's ill-advised tilting technique, which to my eye makes it look like it's a shot from an Irwin Allen disaster flick with the ship about to go down.

If you can, bring a camera with good high ISO performance. This eliminates all point-and-shoots. Dial the ISO as high as you can without making the noise objectionable. Also try to have a fast lens. f/2.8 for example. A medium telephoto will bring the performers in tight. If you can, meter on the performers. If you don't, your camera will take into effect all the dark and result in the performers being overexposed and giving you the aforementioned garage look. So check your histogram and underexpose if necessary to get a good result. This will have the added benefit of letting you speed up your shutter speed, which will reduce blurring. As for composition, get one good wide shot of the entire band. You'll have to take a few to get one good one. Then concentrate on the individual performers.

  • It's not really hard, just go in front of the crowd. And try to stand as still as you can, try to not get moved by the crowd. :). Easiest thing to do would be bringing a small (good) camera, because if you have a big one and you are being moved a lot, the pictures might come out fuzzy.

Also change positions all the time, when you are in front of the bass player, don't try to zoom and get a picture of the singer, It will just not work. You are going to have to move a lot.

    Good luck :).

  • fast zoom lens... 18-200mm f/1.8

you'll need to work out how to use photoshop too
