macro photography?
What exactly IS a macro shot.
I thought it was a close shot where the focus is on the closest object and the background is blur. I took this shot http://www.flickr.com/photos/24697936@N08/23332501...
and i have been told its not macro???
please clarify this?

First of all, your Fujifilm S3000 is not an SLR.
For someone to say that this is not macro may be splitting hairs. Some would say that macro is a 1:1 image and that's it. Others would say that anything "really close up" qualifies.
Hey. You can see the scratches on the chrome, can't you? Personally, I think I'd call this a macro shot and not lose any sleep over it.
If anyone said that these were not macro, I'd start a fight.

Yours isn't THAT much farther away. If you cropped out the background, nobody would argue with you. I can't fix the focus or blur, but who wouldn't call this a macro shot:

I am currently writing a macro for beginners website. It is a new site that explains macro in plain and simple terms. Although not strictly macro your shot is a "close up". As stated by others this is all to do with the amount of magnification used. The ratio 1:1 is equal to life size. This means that if you placed the subject on the camera sensor or film it would be the exact same size.
I hope this helps. If not try my website for a full definition of macro photography. http://macrophotographyforbeginners.blogspot.com/
A macro shot is generally shot with a macro lens. The lens allows you to focus on very small objects and fill the frame. A 1:1 macro will allow you to focus on a penny and fill the entire frame with it. Your shot is not a macro but it is close up. If you are interested in a more technical description google macro photography.
Macro is taking a close composition and getting even closer. Trust me, the blur you see in your background is crystal clear next to a true bokeh in a macro shot. I'm going to comment on your picture, please check out my photography though I have a few macro examples. [names A.Grimm by the way]

Same camera but with Canon 50 mm f 2.5 Macro. Not so close--but I believe if it had been taken with a non-macro lens, the corners would not have been so sharp.
