  • I agree that you probably have a trade school/technical college nearby that has Automotive Technology courses available. But, take a minute to understand that the most you can hope for from this schooling is hopefully a sound foundation of some basics (but I doubt it). When you start your job in the real-world, that's when the education will begin. Hopefully you find a decent tech to take you under his/her wing.

  • I agree, there is no better way to learn than by getting your hands dirty. It also helps if you have someone experience to take you under his wing and teach you some things. If you are really interested, find a school with a reputable Automotive Technology program and take in as much of the basics as you can. This will get you in the right path of becoming a successful technician in the future.I myself have an automotive addiction(lol),so if I am not wrenching,or racing,I am researching and trying to learn something new.Dont make the mistake of attending a highly advertised school such as UTI.I have talked to people that have graduated UTI and said they could of got just as much out of a community college. On the other hand,if engine rebuilding is something you would like to get into...SAM(school of automotive machinist) is a good one to consider. However, most people who attend SAM have prior mechanical experience.

  • Your local city college probably has the courses you want. When I was in highschool, 40 years ago, I took auto mechanics there. My highschool auto shop left me with skill and knowledge I use still to this day.
