The dependence upon modern entertainment and telecommunication technology is probably unhealthy for people. We need them to move around from one place to another, dependant upon them to access information, for our entertainment, and exploit it as the primary method of communication with others. As far as some are concerned, this indicates an unhealthy dependence possibly leading to the development of anti-social behaviors some of among teenagers and children. This view is argued by Scott Sleek, a Monitor staff reporter who writes that “the Internet connects us with people we might otherwise never meet – and may be leaving us lonelier than ever.” According to Sleek and other critics of modern communication technology, our great dependence upon the Internet on daily bases that previously involved interaction with others, such as entertainment, has isolated us from people and made us a bit anti-social. However, this negative outlook on the effect of recent entertainment and telecommunication technology on people’s social development and relations is not absolutely true. In fact, other views, as stated by the professors of psychology Leo Sang-Ming Whang and Geunyoung Chang, argue that the modern forms of communication technology have made people more, and not less, sociable. Not only has the Internet and the iPod not promoted isolation, or anti-social behaviors among children and adolescents. Rather, they have motivated greater interest in other people, and have increased the level of interaction among families. Modern communication technologies have brought people closer together, not driven them apart.
