Becoming a trauma doctor after military service?
So i want to join the army for 4 years, and then go to college, medschool, and ultimately become a trauma surgeon or an ER physician. this is the math i did:
4 years army
4 years undergrad
4 years med school
3-4 years ER residency
1-2 years of Trauma Fellowship
so i would be in my mid 30's when becoming a board certified Trauma surgeon or ER Physician.
Is this detrimental to a career? Is age a factor in the hiring process?

This wouldn't really be detrimental to your career, however, if you want the military to pay for medical school you will have to re-up your commitment to serve. If you serve your four years they would likely pay afterward for you to earn your undergrad degree through the Montgomery GI Bill however, if you want the military to fund your medical education, it is a different program, called the HPSP (health professions scholarship program). If you do that, for one, it is very tough to get your desired specialty, but also, post-residency, you will owe the equivalent of whatever was longer, your medical school education or your residency in service time as a physician.
Example of what I meant with the last sentence of that paragraph...if you do HPSP, and you become an ER physician (3 year residency), you will owe four years of service, for your four years of medical school. If you do a general surgery residency (5 years), you will owe them 5 more years after residency.
As N said, emergency medicine physicians are not surgeons, and as far as I know, there is no subspecialty trauma training for non-surgeons. To become a trauma surgeon, you will do a 5 year general surgery residency followed by 1 year of surgical critical care fellowship. You will still be young enough if you stick to your plan that age would not likely be a factor in your hiring process.

To become a trauma surgeon you need to do a general surgery residency first which is 5 years, then a trauma fellowship. ER physicians are not surgeons.
The army has medical school programs, look into those, talk to a recruiter for more info.
