How to downshift a manual car?
Can you downshift a manual transmission without stepping on the breaks?
Meaning can I just let go of the gas and let the car cruise for awhile until it reaches the right speed and then step on the clutch and downshift without using the breaks at all?

are you talking about how to stop the car or slow the car down without using the brakes? well, that's easy, you just push in the clutch, downshift, then release the clutch.
or are you asking how to shift without using the clutch? in that case, you have to use the clutch to get into first, but from first to second, you just shift into neutral, let the rpm's drop until they match the speed with second gear, then pop it into second.
then again, I kinda don't know exactly what you're asking
Yes, but be sure to downshift to the next gear down. Don't try to go from 5 or 4 to 2 without braking. A gradual downshift should feel just like an automatic car, when you go from Drive gear down to 3 and 2, which I use when driving on offramps on the highway sometimes.
Why won't you get your brakes fixed? I hope you're not trying to downshift as a substitute for braking, because you could never downshift to first gear, for instance. That would be dangerous to car and driver.
you let up the clutch too fast always be gentle on the clutch and smooth out the ride . The passengers of a good driver would not even know a gear chang had happened also do not change down at high revs just make it flow you will soon get the hang of it then you will become a good driver and think ahead when approaching lights and junctions start to change down in plenty of time so when you get to the junction you are in a low gear eg 2nd so if the lights change or the road is clear you can pull off smartly And smoothly also by letting out the clutch slowly when changing down will slow the car and save the brakes . then you will become real driver not like the auto freaks. Good luck and keep trying
What? The reason you would down gear is to get a power burst or to let the engine slow the car down so that you DON"T have to use the breaks ( like in a curve or turning). What would be the point in letting the car cruise to a lower speed just to go to a lower gear;hell you might as well put it in neutral and just stop.
Of course. You don't need to step on the brakes to downshift, I do it all the time. In fact, I barely use the brakes unless i need to stop at a stop sign or traffic light. And you should always have your foot on the gas no matter what, except if you need to decelerate.
yes, you can. to do ot smoothly, when you push your foot on the clutch, give it a little gas as you change gears so the revs go up, to match where it will be in that gear, that way it won't clunk and shudder when you let the clutch out
no it will overun your tac
well it depends on your speed if your not going to fast it will not hurt it just let go of the gas then shift but if your running 30 above on your last gear i wouldnt down shift it
