The way to determine this is to study what prophets did within the Bible and what they did not. It differs from New Testament to Old Testament.

Another prophet named Agabus bound the apostle Paul and told him he would be bound in Rome.
Another time the people were warned of a famine to come and stocked up food in advance.

Jesus told his disciples they were to bless and not curse when they wanted to call down fire on some people who disrespected Jesus . He told them they had no idea what he was about.
Okay so later there are instances of cursing . One man was blind for a time for wanting to buy the Holy Ghost . Another time Ananias and Saphiras dropped dead after lying about money. This is in direct contradiction to what Jesus said about cursing people but no one addresses this. I have known prophet like people who curse others.They really, really bother me. I do not think this is appropriate ever.
The instance with Ananias and Saphrias could be word of knowledge and not a cursing. You would need to study the text.

. I have seen the future like someone is going to be in a horrible accident or die just by looking at them . It is unnerving.
Do I think I am a prophet?
Well, many are called but few are chosen.
I think I have gifts but I am not all that faithful . I would not call myself a prophet.
By their fruit you will know them. Do they ask for money ? Do they make excuses for the prophecies that do not come to pass? Do you feel better for speaking to them or worse?
Yes, you need money to travel but you know the difference. If they are selling you something , it is usually a bad sign. They may sell dvds but they should be giving the word away also. If they are not, this seems wrong to me.
Ask God to show you who is okay and who is disreputable. Peace should follow all revelation . If you pray and have no peace , dismiss what has been said to you.
The Bible indicates that peace would act as a guard around our hearts and minds.
Are they taking the place of the Holy Spirit? You should be listening for that still small voice of God . Remember God gives you the desires of your heart. This means you will be led by your desires IF you care enough to seek God will your whole heart and might. If you are half hearted, you will get half backed guidance or nothing but your own imagination.
Pray and do what you think is right. I have seen wild prophecies that never bore fruit . I just think you have to be very , very careful who you listen to.
If this "prophet" lives far away, there is no way to know how they live . They are not accountable for their words if they fly in and fly out. The local prophet must be incorporated into the churches and normally will be found in the prayer groups. This is just typically where I find them. Sadly enough , sometimes pastors are not where these people are because of their busy schedules so the church goes on without their insight and revelation . The gifts operate rather you are pentecostal or Baptist. You probably won't be speaking in tongues but all the other gifts mentioned in the Bible will be present to greater or lesser degree.
