I like names that have harmony to them. Words that reverberate together. For first names, I use either the two baby books I keep in my reference library at my right shoulder or www.behind the name.com. I also like meanings of names that fit the characters. For surnames, I use the US Census Bureau List of Surnames in America from Most to Least Common. I keep both sites bookmarked and play around to match up names. I try not to get too common or too uncommon unless it is for a reason. No, I never use friend's names.
Nelson de Mille does an interesting thing with character's names in his books. Friends of his make nice donations to his favorite charities and he names a character for them. And occasionally Michael Connelly will hold a contest and the prize is a character named for you. Fun ideas.
I know another author who always chooses his names by reading the credits in movies. Sound man, camera man, etc. He picks interesting names up that way and saves them.
Names can always be changed later. I once wrote a whole novel with my female lead having one name and then decided when the book was done, I hated the way the name sounded with the last name of the man she married. So I used find and replace on Word, and she had a new first name in seconds.

Okay..... well why don't you just call the characters "He" and "She" for the time being. Then maybe the perfect name will come to you. That's what I do when I write.
