Can you guys do me a favor?

Can you guys PLEASE stop saying that "agnostic" means you believe in a higher power? Because that's not what it means at all, and it's kind of annoying AND embarrassing when you get that wrong. Look up the word in the dictionary. Thanks.

Update:

Well since some of you kiddies are still too intellectually lazy to look it up, I've done it for you. Here it is:

ag⋅nos⋅tic  /ægˈnɒstɪk/ Pronunciation [ag-nos-tik]

–noun

1. a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.

2. a person who denies or doubts the possibility of ultimate knowledge in some area of study.

Comments

  • I never did say it. It is my understanding that agnostics say they do not know if there is a god or not. Many also say it is not possible to know. Is that close enough?

  • It does not mean they will not commit. That is equally an error. An agnostic can be a theist or an atheist. It means that any professed knowledge of god if beyond our ability to know.

In effect, agnosticism is the greater of all positions as it first clearly recognizes that which we do not know. The position fo a religious agnostic would be.... "I can not prove to you any of the miricles of the bible or whether or not there was a man called Jesus. These things are beyond idrect knowledge. But in my heart, I feel them to be true."

They are not true and the agnostic knows it, They are not real and are in fact beyond knowing. The agnostic admits this while quite possibly searching for the truth he or she desires to believe. To a religious agnostic, a world without a creator of some sort may just seem out of place, but still they must admit that God in not knowable.

The agnostic who leans towards the side of athiesm can not say for sure that there is no god. Only that there is no proof. That whaterve it is people choose to call God is beyong our ability to know. To experience directly. Unlike the other agnostic, he or she would have no problem at all accepting a world created by randome events, aliens, or even evolution. Much like the theory of god, these theories are equally only guesses and quite beyond our ability to actually Know for certain.

In the end. What we have with agnostics is the understanding that a theory is only a theory and until it is proven as a fact, there really is no point in "believing or not believing." That which is beyone the senses is not knowable. That which remains in theory, has not yet been proven and is not knowable for certain. An agnostic can be both rejogious or antireligious but in all theings they are most likely curious.

  • Hey did you hear agnostics believe in a higher power?

  • Agnostics who do not believe in a higher power should upgrade to a better guitar amp.

    "This one goes to eleven!"

  • Whats a agnostic?

  • Hey! Don't get upset if you know what they're trying to say. Soul is physical life and ends at death. Spirit is what people really mean when they say "immortal soul". If you can translate, what does it matter? Could you do us a favor and not try to limit our speech?

  • very true. if someone says agnostics believe in a higher power, well then suck my d**k

  • i have never commited said offense, and i'm hurt that you would think i'd be that ignorant.

everyone knows it's the atheists who believe in a higher power

  • It means they will not commit to one side or the other, I was one once. They do not believe or disbelieve. And many on here do not care anyway, just so you know.

    take care.

  • Can I have two points? I'll pay you back. Thanks.

(I don't have to answer the question because I'm not one of those people.)
