Because emo stands for emotive hardcore, a lot of people mistake it for meaning emotional. A lot of non emos assume that emotional has a direct link.to depression. When some people are depressed they cut to release stress/anger/to comfort them.
For me, emo music and being myself more has stopped me from being suicidal. I thought I was alone, and no one was like me because everyone where I live is mainstream and preppy. But emo helped me from being depressed.

cutting is part of the emo culture. That's probably why people think that. Even though not all are the same obviously.
