last bit of help. If you can show me how to work out the following problem I'd be most grateful.
8 - 1/4 (3x - 5) = 4 - x
the 1/4 is one over 4.

=> 32 - 3x + 5 = 16 - 4x
=> 4x - 3x = 16 - 5 -32
=> x = -21

8-.75x+1.25=4-x
9.25-.75x=4-x
5.25=1.75x
x=-5.25 divided by.25
x=21
