how is a gun silencer made?

This is only for my kids school project, her school is having a science fair and we found this topic to be interesting. I could care less if the FBI, CIA or ATF wants to see the project this is only for a school project.

Same theory as a car muffler. Provide an enclosed space for the gasses to expand with baffles to slow them down.
