Does this central air design make sense?

If the question is does it work the answer is yes. Is it the best design for a home do it yourself job the answer is not likely. The long custom manufactured extended plenum is expensive and more difficult to install for someone inexperienced than flex duct. For a home in California you would more typically see a very short plenum and larger main branch flexduct that Wye's in small flexduct going to the registers.
