Canon Optura 500 not recognized by Mac OS X?

I have a Mac OS X and a Canon Optura 500. I took about 20 minutes of video for a project, and when I plug the camera into the computer via USB cable, nothing happens. I've tried both iMovie and iPhoto, and nothing happens. What can I do? I need to have it off my camera by either tonight or tomorrow morning. I don't have the DV cable.

    I am pretty sure that you need the firewire cable to transfer video frrom that camera to iMovie.

    USB won't work.
