Do employers check for diplomas?

I graduated from college but my diploma must've gotten lost in the mail. Do employees check for diplomas to see proof of the degree, or do they just contact the school? I don't want to waste money on a duplicate diploma.

    I got a great job three months ago and I never had to show them my diploma. They did call the school however, so if you tell them that, it should be fine
