Why do conservatives favor SOCIALIZED defense?

Private defense would probably work better, but might cost more and there would be a question of loyalties.
While mercenaries are often better or more knowledgeable fighters than government troops, merc's won't willingly die taking or holding a hill. No more paydays in that kind of scenario.
However, even almost every other realm of human interaction, capitalism outdoes socialism by a wide margin.
If you question this, just look at the GDP's of different nations, factor in population, and make comparisons.
It's not socialized defense; you do not understand socialism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism. Socialism is about redistribution of wealth, our military redistributes no wealth. It's not like some people have a part of the military and others don't, no one owns it and everyone pays for it.
At any rate, arming, training and housing a military is the state's job. The citizens, to my knowledge, have never directly funded and oversaw military operations in any nation. Purchasing health care is a citizen's job, not the governments.

There are some things that individuals and the states can not do on their own. These few things are in the Constitution and make sense to do on a national level.
That's a good question. I never looked at it from that angel before.
