  • You might need to be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to perform some tasks.

Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk, so that each occupies a single, contiguous space on the volume. As a result, your system can gain access to your files and folders and save new ones more efficiently. By consolidating your files and folders, Disk Defragmenter also consolidates the volume's free space, making it less likely that new files will be fragmented.

You can also defragment disks from a command line using the defrag command:

    Syntax -

    defrag volume

    defrag volume [/a]

    defrag volume [/a] [/v]

    defrag volume [/v]

    defrag volume [/f]

    Parameters -

/a Analyzes the volume and displays a summary of the analysis report.

/v Displays the complete analysis and defragmentation reports. When used in combination with /a, displays only the analysis report. When used alone, displays both the analysis and defragmentation reports.

/f Forces defragmentation of the volume regardless of whether it needs to be defragmented.

/? Displays help at the command prompt.

To open Disk Defragmenter, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.

A volume must have at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete unneeded files or move them to another disk.

You cannot defragment volumes that the file system has marked as dirty, which indicates possible corruption. You must run chkdsk on a dirty volume before you can defragment it. You can determine if a volume is dirty by using the fsutil dirty query command. For more information about chkdsk and fsutil dirty, see Related Topics.

While defrag is analyzing and defragmenting a volume, it displays a blinking cursor. When defrag is finished analyzing and defragmenting the volume, it displays the analysis report, the defragmentation report, or both reports, and then exits to the command prompt.

By default, defrag displays a summary of both the analysis and defragmentation reports if you do not specify the /a or /v parameters.

  • Easiest way to handle defragmentation is by installing an automatic defragmenter. It will run in the background and defrag as necessary when the system is idle. Unlike with the resource-hogging scheduled or manual defrag, you can use the PC while automatic defrag is running. Since you don't have to supervise it, you also save time. A well defragmented drive performs better and has a longer lifespan because it does less work, so you can avoid premature hardware replacement costs. Automatic defrag helps to keep the drive defragmented on a continuous basis.

  • If you are using the built in tool, make sure that no other program runs to interrupt its task,( run it in safe mode) you need atleast 15% free space For this you can uninstall programs that you dont need, burn music, movies pics etc onto DVDs ets, run a diskcleanup(get rid of temp files, recycle bin files, older restore points) and you should be able to get some space free. Run a diskcleanup and chkdsk if needed.Go to Start>Accessories>Systemtools>Diskdefrag...

Analyze the drive do as the report suggests. Just ensure there is no power cut during the process.Alternatively to save yourself time and the frustration that sometimes arises from defrags that hang or restart, check out trial versions of automatic defragmenters which once installed do the job in the background without needing work from your end, will save you time and looking at it in the long run, if your drives are in shape, you will have fewer performance issues.

  • to Defrag open 'My Computer' RIGHT click on the C Drive icon, drive, select Properties, then go to TOOLS tab, Click Defragment now button

  • You can defrag by using one of the following methods...

    1) Start > Run > type "dfrg.msc" without quotes..

    2) Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > Defrag

  • From start menu..click accessories..system tools..disc defrag.

  • 1) Start > Run > type dfrg.msc

    2) Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > Defrag
