Do I need a passport to drive to Niagara Falls?

Me and my wife are thinking about going there this weekend from OH, but do not have our passports. Do I need one? I know we could stay on the American side but we would prefer to hit up the wineries in Niagara on the Lake as well, so we would need to go into Canada.

  • No,No, passports are not needed to travel to and from Canada by LAND. The people who continue to say you need a passport to go to Canada by LAND, NEVER give a source...because they can't! The requirement for passports for land travel to Canada is expected to be implemented in summer 2009. For now, you need a photo I.D. and proof of citizrnship...either a passport, OR a birth certificate. See site below to read the correct, current info. You will love Niagra.

  • ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizens traveling to Canada are required to show U.S. Government-issued photo ID and proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

However if you are traveling by air, you would need a passport.

Make sure you go on the White Water Walk. It's amazing and a view of the river few people see. http://www.niagaraparks.com/nfgg/whitewater.php

  • Yes, since 9-11 you'll need a passport when crossing the border at any point. It can take weeks or months to get one.
