Windows XP Professional Upgrade?
I have windows xp home edition that is not working up to par because of a recent crash. I want to install Windows xp pro, however, the upgrade price it states is $185 (approx) and just the OS is 300 bucks. Is XP Home to Pro an "upgrade" and will it cost 185 dollars? Or will I pay 300 bucks. I don't understand what they consider an upgrade.
Update:Thank you all for your answers. For future answerneers: I don't want to reinstall Home edition i wanted a more stable version like one person mentioned. I'm getting a new Mac this christmas so I'm not going to get Vista. Thank you for all your responses!!

Yes, WinXP Home is eligible for an upgrade to WinXP Pro, so you can purchase the upgrade edition.
XP Home and Pro are slightly different models of the same operating system. I do believe you need to pay to upgrade to Pro. Personally, I wouldn't do that right now since Vista is coming out so soon (January, I think).
You should have your original XP installation disk somewhere. I would reinstall Windows to see if that helps. I would be very, very careful to back up any important documents first, though. I reinstalled Windows on my home computer not too long ago when my kids messed it up. It reinstalled fine and I didn't lose anything, but I still wouldn't take chances. Now that it's reinstalled and the viruses are gone it works great!
I found XP Pro to be 100x more stable because of the architecture and build of the software based off the Server software. Far less bugs but I would try a friend or somebody of the sort to borrow their CD... And if borrowing not an option I would wait till windows vista business (XP Pro in vista form). Hope this helps!
Home to Pro qualifies for upgrade pricing - see here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/m... See the link in the source for the differences. If you don't need these features, though, don't bother. The next true upgrade is Vista, available at the end of January 2007.
just reinstall xp home. pro has got a few more things not many. and you should beable to get cheaper then 300. i would buy any upgrades myself.
convinced. If it is an entire replica purely positioned the disk in and follow the activates for an installation. this can format the force and delete each of the recommendations on it. If it is purely an improve, bypass to the link below for coaching. P.S. I purely see the only question the following!
it is an upgrade. you will be paying the $185 price.
