How do I compute TOTAL GPA?

I went to a community college for two years, and then transferred over to a four-year. Each transcript only reflects the GPA of the individual school. How do I compute my total GPA from both institutes? I'm trying to determine what my total GPA is to apply to grad school. Thanks!

  • Add the scores, then divide by the number of schools attended. That's the combined GPA.

  • It's usually very easy to do. First determine if you are on a five point scale or four point scale. For each class, you get assigned a number based on your grade. Say you get a B in a class and the system is a four point scale. Then you get another B and then an A. So you earned 3 pts, 3 pts, and 4 pts. The maximum pts would be 12 for the three classes. So add up your points which would be 10, and then divide by 3 which is the number of classes. So you have a 3.33 GPA.

    EDIT: Listen to Kris.

    SECOND EDIT: Kris I'm not sure that is correct, because if you took 20 classes at the CC and only 10 at the university, your combined GPA would not be correct. It would be skewed towards your CC credits. I believe he has to do the whole thing. Add everything up and then divide by the number of classes.

  • Depending on where you are applying for graduate school, you shouldn't have to compute your total GPA. The grad school application will typically ask you what your GPA was for each school you graduated from. They'll ask to see transcripts from each school you attended or earned academic credit.

    Anyway if you are curious, most schools use a quality point average. Each grade is assigned a value:

    A = 4

    A- = 3.7

    B+ = 3.3

    B = 3

    B- = 2.7

    C+ = 2.3

    C = 2

    C- = 1.7

    D+ = 1.3

    D = 1

    D- = 0.7

    F= 0

    Take the grade you earned for your class multiplied by the number of credits you earned for that class. Add them all up and divide by the number of credits you earned.

    For example, I had three class, each earning three credits. I earned an A, a B, and an A-.

    Class 1: A = 4 (grade value) * 3 (credits) = 12

    Class 2: B = 3 (grade value) * 3 (credits) = 9

    Class 3: A- = 3.7 (grade value) * 3 (credits) = 11.1

    12+9+11.1 = 32.1 quality points

    32.1 divided by 9 (total credits) = 3.567 GPA

    Hope that helps.

  • Look at all your grades in all your classes and determine what you have.

    For every

    A 4 points

    B 3 points

    C 2 points

    D 1 point

    F 0 points

    Say you have 7 classes with a "A,B,B,A,A,A" that would be 22 points.

    Take 22 in the example and divide it by how many classes you have which would be 7.

    So 22 divided by 7 is 3.142857

    Your GPA in the example is a 3.1 because you round.
