Is "riconquista" a real threat?
we always hear "they're invading!", and don't get me wrong, I'm completely against illegal immigration. But, is there really a threat to the southern states really being given back to Mexico? Or is this just delusional whackjobs thinking they can actually reclaim CA, NM, and AZ?

Don't let a crazy idea put you off just because it's a crazy idea. Let's think about it from the bottom up, rather than just listen to the extremists.
First, if the foreign born population of a state outnumbers the natural born USA citizens in that state, the defacto political power belongs to the foreigners. That's two senators FOR SURE and most of the reps.
This is not a problem if they're fully assimilated. But just how assimilated can a person be who has lived most of their lives in a foreign country? Also, since the majority will be foreign born, they will be feeding on their own original culture and ideas. If they come in too quickly, there is no way they could be fully assimilated. Also, Spanish will probably be the DEFACTO language in these states.
This is a dangerous situation. They will have the power, they will have imported Mexican politics, and most will be poor. And let's not forget one BIG thing: most Mexicans truly believe the Southwest USA was stolen from them.
I'm not sure there would be war, but they could vote to secede. But before they secede, we will see unreasonable demands for federal aid from the state, unreasonable demands from neigboring states, ethnic violence, and probably an underground separatist movement that would have wide-spread support in the state.
I can guarantee you if they try to pull that crap in Texas, natural-born Texans will start a war.
If you doubt that this is reasonable, look at the mess in Sweden and France. They allowed tons of Muslims in that didn't integrate into the society and now they are having ethnic strife because of it. In France, they banned all religious headdress from schools. They really wanted to ban the Muslim headdress because of the ethnic problems that were springing up. And in Sweden, a representative of the Muslim groups is asking that Sweden now have two sets of laws: one for Muslims and one for non-Muslims. Ethnic strife is EXTREMELY common in areas that have widely disparate ethnic groups. The real ethnicity in America is American, and it has nothing to do with race or country of origin. But if these people are not really AMERICANS in their heart, they are a different ethnic group.
We can prevent this possiblity by limiting citizenship and residence of Mexicans. We have to prevent these mass legalization of illegals, because this is completely undermining the intent of our immigration laws. Immigration laws are NOT arbitrary. They're intended to keep our society stable.
...I think anyone who honestly believes in the physical "reconquista" of the American Southwest back to Mexico is probably delusional. Now, with that being said, the "virtual" reconquista is a potentially real event, whereby the immigrant population will eclipse natural born citizens of the region. Is it a threat to the nation? Probably not, but who can tell for sure.
Don't forget southern Texas!
