Is the 2000 toyota celica a good car?

Im planning on buying this car but in the review it said that the engine is peaky and that I would have to get a new engine soon. Is this true? and what is like a sister car to this car? I really like what it looks like and the model of the inside and outside. im looking for a used car that isn't so expensive but it still looks nice and its in good shape. Thanks!

  • the celica and the celica gts are commonly abused. the 2zz engine in the gts model is an outright screamer. known for that, it is abused. the 1zz engine in the base celica is not as potent. but is still abused by those who think it can compete with the gts/2ZZ engines.

the power band for those is narrow and up around redline. that makes for some serious engine wear on one that has been driven farily hard through out it's life.

i disagree with toys going down hill. most of that is due to abuse on engines that can now deliver since the advent of dynamic cam curves. VVT-varriable valve timing. some with inteliigence after 2000.

  • J (above is right) Toyota is not the same, and will never be like the vehicles we saw in the 90's. I owned a 03 Toyota Camry, and many things went wrong with the car. The head bolts comes loose causing coolant to leak between the head and the block of the engine. I am not making this up, you can do your own research about the 02,03,04,05,06 camry's head bolts problem (2.4L Engine).

Never buy a car just because you like how it looks, or like nowadays because it SAVES gas. You want to buy a good car, buy a Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car.... those are good car. Sadly they wont make them anymore. Good Luck

  • Don't believe everything you read. Toyotas are reliable if they've been maintained. That often goes for any car.

Have the vehicle thoroughly looked over by a good mechanic, even if you have to pay a few bucks, it'll save you a lot of frustration and money in the future.

  • I wouldnt buy it

Toyotas have really went down hill in quality in the 2000's and the car is getting to an age it just will not be reliable much longer
