When I had my implanted cardioverter defibrillator installed they billed insurance for about 35,000 dollars in medical equipment. It is a good bet that the defibrillator was most of that cost. The cost for a pacemaker would be similar. That cost also covers the wires going to the heart, and a home monitor for the defibrillator. A home monitor allows a patient to fax diagnostic and health data collected by the device to the doctor from their home rather than visiting the device clinic every time there is an issue.
It depends on how much, and what type of insurance you have. This apparently varies from country to country.
I'm in the USA, and am on Medicaid. I have a neurological pacemaker (a "VNS") that was covered by my insurance. The cost without insurance would have been tens of thousands of dollars, not to mention the regular battery replacement surgery every five years.
