i have got a letter through from payday express saying i missed a payment and owe them 400 odd quid and to call them.

i have never taken a loan out with anyone.

i looked up payday express and they are a legit company.

any opinions?

and how did they get all my contact details?

the number i got was 08000126347 to call but even that doesnt seem very professional

Update:

  • DO NOT call them for any reason. The first thing to do is run your credit reports to see if there is any loan on them. If there is, then you need to file a police report for identity theft, then contact the credit bureaus through certified mail with a copy of the police report to dispute any loans or other unknown debts. You also need to file with CIFAS for protective registration

Follow all the steps here http://www.ico.gov.uk/for_the_public/topic_specifi...

Then you send a send a copy of the police report through certified mail to the payday loan company stating "I do not acknowledge this debt. I am the victim of identity theft and this debt is being disputed through the credit bureaus. Enclosed is a copy of the police report. You are to cease and desist all contact with me as I am not the owner of this debt"

If nothing shows up on your credit report then this sounds like a scam to try and steal money from you. Paydayexpress is a legitimate payday lender but there is no way to know that a scammer is not using their name

But never assume it's a scam. A friend kept getting calls from a collections agency thinking it was a scam until her father told her to run a credit report and it turns out she was the victim of identity theft and someone had not only taken out a loan in her name but also opened and maxed out two credit cards

But do not ever call or do anything over the phone - when dealing with creditors do everything in writing and keep a copy of all correspondence as well as proof of delivery

EDIT - you can run a credit report through

    Experian http://www.experian.co.uk/

    or

    Equifax http://www.equifax.co.uk/

  • If you've never had a loan with them then ignore them.
