How do schools evaluate your FAFSA?

I'm a chem/bio tutor, and I want to offer up to 50% off my usual rates for students requiring financial aid. The FAFSA is way too extensive so I should create my own form, but what info should I ask? All I really care about is the family's income....Why does the FAFSA ask for SSN's and all that? What should I include on my form and how should I word it? Thanks so much

Update:

The students are primarily high schoolers...

  • FAFSA asks for SSN and all of that because it is government funded. FAFSA amounts are determined by need, tax forms, and course attendance.

If you're looking for a way to help students who receive financial aid, you best option might be to simply request a copy of their award letter. Students have this available to them on their school's websites, and it will be an easily obtainable way of finding out if a student would qualify for your program that you want to start. Some might complain about showing you that information, but it helps protect them and you, and you won't have anything harmful to them - it'll simply give you the information you want to qualify people.
