Oh dear! Tick issues!?

My dog suddenly has gotten ticks, I keep finding them on her every day (she gets a full body "inspection" every night now!) I'm finding like 5-6 each evening.

She is an indoor dog and stays in a kennel all day, only time she goes out is for an hour or so to do her business and play. I've washed her bedding and bleached the kennel, she's not allowed on the carpet at all (baby gate) so any time she's out of her kennel it's on tile only.

She is half shih-tzu and had long hair - Because of the flea/tick issues I've had to shave her very short so I can see the little buggers.

I bathe her every few days with flea/tick shampoo and use the flea/tick drops as well. I've recently (4 weeks ago) had the interior of my house exterminated for everything. Is there anything I can do for the yard? I'm assuming that's where they have to be coming from.

The exterminating place wants $120 to come out and do the yard, there has to be a cheaper way! What can I put in the yard? Any suggestions?

  • Go to a hardware or feed store and pick up some Diazinon only make sure it is the crushed pecan shells. Wet the yard down really good, then Sprinkle it all over your backyard keeping the dog inside for 24 hours. the ticks should be gone for years after that. We treated our backyard years ago and still havent gotten any back.

  • you should use Frontline on her....the flea/tick drops like hartz or the other brands u can get at walmart don't work....u have to use Frontline or Advantage that u get from the vet or order online.....it is more expensive but it really works.....also there is a spray called Ovitrol that u can order online too, u spray the entire dog with it after a bath and leave it on and it works for 10 days....but i would not use both ....only either/or.....u don't want to overwhelm the dog.....as for the yard, there is a liquid called Dettol that u mix with water and u spray it on any crevices or edges of the grass and around the edge of your house...hope these things work because i know that ticks are very hard to get rid of.....

  • I live in the South where ticks are a big issue as well. All my critters get a monthly application of Frontline Plus. No ticks, no fleas, no problem.

  • The very pest thing to use for ticks is a Preventic collar. They work like a charm and will get rid of all the ticks. Eventually, they will be gone from the premises. When the ticks get on her, they will die and fall off

  • Ask this question in the Garden area and you could probably shorten up your question to "What insecticide could I use to kill ticks in my yard?"

In the meantime, start using a better flea and tick product. I prefer Biospot but use Frontline because it is easier to find.
