Anyway, the definition of a desert is lack of available water. In the Antarctic all the water is frozen and so not available. Hence it is a desert.
Deserts in general are not always hot. The Gobi desert in the north of China and Mongolia are extremely cold in winter. I even have photos of sanddunes covered in snow (that I took myself)

Desert doesn't mean cold, it means little or no rain.
