1996 Silverado Transfer case problem..I think?
Well, I posted an issue a week ago or so and got the answers I was looking for, I'm trying again. In drive(4WD not engaged) at time when a bit of gas is given, I'll hear the gears grinding( I think the transfer case maybe) The tranny still has power, and it moves along fine. When I engage the 4WD, it goes away and it's all cool. But when I disengage, it comes back. The front diff has oil, front actuator was replaced and the transfer case has oil.......I am perplexed! to say the least....any ideas from anybody?

Most likely the chain that drives the tranfer case has stretched (common problem) when 4wd is engaged it keeps enough tension to stop the noise
that has a vacuum switch on the transfer case that locks the front diff, they go bad all the time, if they leak vacuum the diff will not disengage or not engage at all, it cost about 25. bucks for the part and sits on top of the t-case on the drivers side, it also has 3 vacuum lines going to it.
Be sure that your the front axle actuator is working. When they fail the front differential will not lock in.. This is a fairly common Chevy problem to check before deciding that it is the transfer case not working.
maybe the linkage has to be adjusted sounds like its not completely in gear
