I've heard it can cause fatigue,ear infections, sinus infections, UTI's,fibromyalgia. What other stuff does it cause and what are the major symptoms of it?
Candida albicans is a commonly occuring yeast. Most people, expecially women, are colonized with it without it causing any problems. Normally growth is kept in check by the presence of "good" bacteria and the person's healthy immune system.
For instance, most women have yeast in their vaginas, but the presence of a bacterium called Lactobacillus creates an acid environment, which prevents the yeast from growing too much. If something happens to kill off the Lactobacillus, such as the use of antibiotics, the pH of the vagina will rise (become less acidic) and will create a wonderful environment for the growth of yeast. The yeast will "overgrow" and take over, causing a nasty infection. A common treatment for vaginal yeast infections is to douche with live yogurt culture, which contains Lactobacillus.
Candida can also be commonly found in the mouth and an overgrowth of the yeast will cause thrush (also called candidiasis). This is most often found in infants who do not yet have strong immune systems.
Candida infection can occur in other areas of the body, but this is relatively rare.
I would not be concerned contracting a yeast infection unless you are immunocompromised or undergoing antibiotic therapy.
