Grade 9 - (4x^2-22)(x^2-16) = 64 x^4 ?

(4x^2-22)(x^2-16) ?

the ^ means power

  • (a+b)(c+d) = ac+ad+bc+bd

    So in this case:

    (4x^2-22)(x^2-16)= 4x^4 -22x^2 -64x^2 +352 = 4x^4 -86x^2 +352

  • FOIL the left side, and you get:

    4x^4 - 86x^2 +352 = 64x^4

    subtract everything to the right side:

    0=60x^4 + 86x^2 -352

    divide by 2 to make it easier to look at.

    0=30x^4 + 43 x^2 - 176

    Treat x^2 like x for now, and you get 30x^2 + 43x -176

    Using the quadratic formula, you will get (-43+- 151.56)/60

    If you only want real solutions use x^2 = (-43 + 151.56)/60

    x^2= about 1.8

    x= +- 1.34

    That is an UGLY problem for 9th grade math...sheesh

  • Phyllis,

    Open the brackets and simplify

    4X^2*(X^2-16)-22*(X^2-16) = 64X^4

    4X^4-64X^2-22X^2+352 = 64X^4

    -60X^4-86X^2+352 = 0 (64X^4 transferred to left hand side)

    60X^4+86X^2-352 = 0 (multiply both side by -1)

    Now use your skill to factor this, I am sure you know this.

    Compare each bracket with 0 and get X values.
