Best free program to import DV tapes to computer?

I just got a Canon HV40 and wan't to import the raw footage onto my computer. I need it to format the files to something that After Effects will recognize. What is the best free alternative for me?

  • well windows movie maker does import video from a mini dv and stuff

  • If you want raw video the you will need to capture the video as uncompressed video the problem with this is the size of the video files for every 90 minutes of video you are talking about 130GB. Most people with tape based cameras capture the video as a DV-AVI, windows movie maker will capture this, but its not the best prog to edit video.

if you go to file/import/file in AE then go to the bottom and click all acceptable files you will get a long list of video that it can import.

you can try this one its free, (dont know how well it works)

I assume you are using firewire to capture the video, and not via USB.
