Why do progressives consistently try to empower the federal government?
Why do they try to disempower the individual (like the individual mandate, or the various regulations)?

You mean like trying to get rid of the death penalty?
I don't know.
Why did Mitt Romney disempower the average citizen of Massachusetts forcing them all to buy health insurance?
And before you say, "Oh, but it's federal"
It's the same idea. A governing entity robs an individual of his choice.
We are all ultimately free to, as Nietzsche might suggest, "live dangerously."
For a gross example; do you imagine one percenter outlaw bikers are troubled by government mandates? I think probably not.
The individual has all the rights he is prepared to accept the risk in order to seize.
Rarely has a serial killer been troubled by the lawful prohibition of murder.
They believe it's better for america and for the people. Some social programs, like welfare or public-option healthcare and schooling, are. Individual mandates, secret police, and endless numbers of bureaucrats running around putting unnecessary regulations on small businesses, are not good.
Somebody needs to keep an eye on the wall street, and financial institutions. We tried deregulation and now you see where it got us. If people would and that means people running the financial institutions wouldn't be so greedy we wouldn't need all those regulations
Liberals are just slaves in search of a master, and government is viewed as an excellent master.
Because this day in age, we are not responsible enough to take care of our self's. the human race due to rapid growth in technology now see our self's as entitled to everything, and want our government to give it all to us. Sad but true.
"Liberty means responsibility, that's why most men dread it."
Liberals do not believe in other peoples liberty
