Do i have maladaptive daydream disorder?

I'm new to this so please forgive me if i'm doing something wrong. And im typing on an ipod so sorry for any misspelt words.

I'm seventeen and i have found my self daydreaming more and more since i moved in with my dad a year ago. I often fInd myself mouthing my daydreams and acting them out (i find it a lot easier to daydream whilst i'm walking). I mostly day dream at night and in the morning for an hour or two. However i do sometimes do this in class but only for what i would describe as short bursts of daydreaming.

One big difference i have found with my situation and people with MDD* is that i dont have an on going storyline. I often come up with scenarios that are very similar to eachother and sometimes go over previous ones again. They are usually one of two types of dreams, i'm either in love with a girl or i'm in a fight with someone. They are extremely film like and contain typical things people would say in films (that wouldn't really work in real life). I also find myself going over certain emphatic phrases my characters might say 5-15 times before i contInue. They are also representative of the mood i'm in (sorry if im choosing the wrong words to use).

I dont know if this will help. I'm currently doing my A-levels but i know ive only taken these as a way of opting out of getting a job. I have very low self esteem and spent a lot of my time playing computer games. I have spoken to my dad about my future but i genuinely dont know what i want to do. Sorry if im going a bit off topic.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Well, since there isn't much known about MD, I don't believe that you could be professionally diagnosed with it. But reading what you've said...The daydreaming for hours, the "film like" quality of the daydreams, the pacing, and acting things out...That's what it sounds like to me.

Daydreamers think about all sorts of different things...Some daydream in 3rd person, others daydream in 1st...Some people are the main character in their daydreams, others aren't...Some people have a story line, others just wing it. Our minds are unique to us, so there's bound to be some differences.

Most Maladaptive Daydreamers I've spoken with do have a tendency to repeat scenarios, or create ones that are very similar to others. I have a story line in my daydreams, but at the same time, I do repeat certain things from time to time. I suppose it just goes along with the saying, "to each his own".

Might a recommend a forum for you?

It's filled with Daydreamers who discuss all of these things (and more), and who are trying to help solve the mystery of MD.

    Hope this helped. :)

  • I don't have much experience with maladaptive daydream disorder, but I daydream a lot. Come up with scenarios, work them out in my head. Doesn't mean the conversation has or is going to take place, but I usually have a pretty vivid imagination of what is happening, and rarely have any control whatsoever when it's happening, just like when I'm dreaming at night, while I'm asleep. Sometimes the outcome is good, sometimes it is bad.

Iwish I could be more help. Talk to a counselor/psych about this, though.
