how to calm my extra fussy baby?

i have a 3.5 months old baby girl, she used to be so calm and never fusses so much and if she did she used to be more quickly calmed, and i was in heaven! Now that i'm back to work after maternity leave, i leave her at my mother's for 7 hours aday, she loves her grandparents and is a happy baby when she arrives and when i go take her home, but 2 days ago she started being exxxxxxxtrrrrrrrraaaa fussy and crying non-stop, she can go on for hours. the only thing that makes her stop is to carry her and walk around. Now, in addition to being a busy working mum, i don't want my baby to get used to cry her way to whatever she wants. can anyone pleeeeeeease help? i'm desprate

  • A three month old baby has no agenda. Really, she will only cry for comfort which she knows you will give, is that an awful thing? Ignore these people that tell you to take a hardline with a newborn, it really doesn't achieve anything other than making your baby insecure.

Sounds to me as though she's going through a growth spurt, three months is prime time for one. Babies react differently during spurts, my son is also extremely clingy during his. Just do what you have to do to make her happy, it won't spoil her.

  • Um, I don't think that at 3 1/2 months old she's going to start manipulating you. My daughter went through a period like this and I just sucked it up and carried her around with me and sang to her and read her stories and basically tried to stay calm. Sometimes rocking her in the stroller would help or going for a car ride. The motion seems to calm them. It sucks when they cry nonstop for no apparent reason and it's very worrying but it's a phase. I would say she might be teething but I think it's too early for that. You might want to run your (clean) fingers over her gums just to check though.

  • 3.5 months... that sounds like another growth spurt. Or Teething... My daughter fusses every-time she grew (still does), and when she teeth.

Is she feed enough? Check and see if she has a fever. Temp of 36 may suggest a mild fever (I was told by my ped that if you take temperature from under the armpit), it can be an ear infection.

If it is none of the above - it could be just a shift in her routine or a combinations of things.

    Good luck!

  • I know it's early but she might be at the beginning of teething? Have you felt her gums, maybe try putting Bonjella on her gums to see if that works. Panadol also works for teething. I found that by giving them both Nurofen (anti-inflammatory) and Panadaol at the same time worked wonders (the chemists recommend it). But if it isn't teething, she is at that age anyways where she is becoming more aware of things. This happened with both my 2 children. But they didn't cry for hours, so maybe she is in some sort of pain (constipated? wind?). Mariners Formula is great for wind. Have you also tried putting her under a mobile toy? Try also giving her teething husks, they worked a treat with my children. Good luck with everything :)

  • Check to see if she has an ear infection. A sudden change like that isn't normal. Some babies have no outward symptoms other than extra crying.
