Private College Prep Class vs Public Honors Class?

Are private high school college preparatory school classes harder than public high school honor classes?

I ask this because my friend, who goes to a public high school in California, flaunts off ALL honor classes. I was amazed and a bit jealous. However, when she started explaining the lessons they were studying, I realized that it was stuff I had learned in middle school or had already currently learned in my regular classes.

I ask this because I'm hoping my dream colleges automatically don't rule me out because I didn't take any honor classes and I received a B in a seemingly 'easy' course.

Thank you in advanced :)!

  • Typically, in the US, good private school curriculum is much much tougher than even the top public school curriculum. My son attends an extremely rigorous private school in LA, CA. They don't have many AP classes, because the curriculum isn't rigorous enough, so they have Honor classes instead for many of the subjects, and the kids take the AP exams. Most get 5's if they're in an AP/Honor class, at least 4's if they're in the regular classes. My dh participates in the admissions process for his Ivy alma mater, and he sees kids ranked at the top of their public school class, with GPAs of 5.0 (so weighted with AP/Honors classes), but only 1's and 2's on all the AP exams, and 1500 on their SAT (out of 2400). So colleges look at much more than just grades.

Unfortunately, even the kids at the most rigorous schools need to get very close to a 4.0 unweighted GPA to be admitted into top colleges and Ivies. While the colleges know the curriculum and grading policies of all high schools, and they do give a bit of a bump for those students who attend schools with very rigorous curriculum, it doesn't turn a B into an A.

Discuss your college goals with your high school college counselor, and make a plan. Look on the college websites for information on Incoming Freshmen Profile (GPA, SAT, etc stats), requirements, etc.

    Good luck!

  • I went to the two. a million-8 public and private intense college. I did high quality in public college. i develop into extremely joyful to bypass to Catholic college for top college when you consider that there have been no gangs no drugs, no killing going on and that i ought to stroll to college. It relies upon very plenty on which public college and which inner maximum college. Catholic faculties are many times academically greater suited than universal college or say nutjob fundy inner maximum college, yet some public faculties have intense standards and intense habit--often in wealthier neighborhoods. inner maximum faculties fee various money public is loose. a sensible new child can do high quality in a the two, yet suffering, mentally unwell, or handicapped young ones do greater suited in inner maximum college the place they're taken greater suited care of.(smaller instructions and better educations for instructors.) If I had the money, i might have despatched my young ones to Catholic college, even however i'm an atheist.
