Do you think Brian Burke made a mistake?

He is going to get burned by these deals he has made this year; Phil Kessel traded for potentially Taylor Hall and next years superstar prospect, they might win the Calgary trade but we don't know how Phaneuf will play in the next few years and the Giguere deal was made to get a mentor for Jonas Gustavsson, but my point is: did Brian Burke ruin the re-building process?

Update:

the pird- they potentially traded Taylor Hall, you don't seem to realize that they won't be able to pick a top prospect for the next two years.

Update 3:

LITWIA- they could also be trading a way a crosby/ovechkin, no risk no reward, and the maple leafs haven't been in the hunt for a long time.

  • "the pird- they potentially traded Taylor Hall, you don't seem to realize that they won't be able to pick a top prospect for the next two years."

    And they may have readed away Alexandre Daigle/Patrick Stefan/Dale McCourt/Joe Murphy/Greg Joly/Doug Wickenheiser/Rick DiPietro.......too

  • Speaking on behalf of both deals made y'day, no Burke has not made a mistake. In the 7 player deal with the Flames, he's getting a top 10 defender in Dion Phaneuf, not to mention two prospective players for the future, which obviously only time will tell in the long-run if they come good. In the short-term the Flames have got the better of the deal, addressing to their forward problems and acquiring Hagman and Stajan who could be in their top 6 forwards, also along with White, who's put on the same numbers near-abouts as Phaneuf. As for the deal with the Ducks, it's a sensible deal in relation to as you mentioned, giving Gustavsson time to adapt and learn, letting Giguere take the lead, and also freeing up cap-space with Blake leaving, allowing room for more maneuvering. The only mistake in my opinion Burke has made was as mentioned by yourself and the fellow above, would be the Kessel trade, as to trade those draft picks away, when you're in the "rebuilding process", is just radical, erratic, it's like some impulse buy, which was extremely costly and as we know from experience, when big names have come to the Leafs in the past, something in their game changes, and they become flops, am not saying Kessel is a flop, but for what the Leafs gave up, and the position they're in now, it clearly wasn't the move to make. Theirs talk Kaberle could be next to go, IF he waives his "no-trade clause", so looks like more change could be coming.

  • He gave up too much for Kessel but thats in the past. Phaneuf will fill the role that McCabe used to and he should jell with Kaberle. Its too bad to lose White but thats the price of trading. Sjostrom fills the same role as Mayers did and Stajan was already as good as out the door. Hagman's value is at an all time high so it makes sense to trade him. Aulie is a good prospect and may become a good defenceman.

As for the Blake/Toskala for Giguere thats also a good deal. The leafs rid themselves of salary this year and have to pay for Giguere next year but i expect he will find his game again under goalie coach Francois Allaire.

So i disagree these trades will both benfit Toronto

  • They are now the youngest team in the NHL, how is that ruining the re-building process?

Asker - Most analysts agree Taylor Hall will never be the player Phil Kessel is now, not to mention the player Kessel will be in a few years. Also the Leafs have 4 2nd round picks for 2010 so I'm perfectly fine with what Burke did.

  • Brian Burke did a fantastic job with these trades. He upgraded his defense, upgraded his goaltending, gave up 1 solid center, and 3 over the hill players for 2 all-stars and a few slot fillers.

There is nothing to complain about. Maple Leaf fans should be cheering, because I don't even think he's done yet.

  • Getting rid of Blake and his salary is a good move for Burke. I'll

admit that he is a very good skater and gets a lot of shots, but he

had only ONE good year with the Islanders but his goals to shots

    on net ratio is poor.

Phaneuf and White's stats are relatively similar but Phaneuf is a better open-ice hitter and he would be a good match with Luke

    Schenn or Beauchemin.

As far as the Giguere trade, at least he might stop that weak shot

    from going in the net.

My opinion? a good deal all around.

  • Other than the Kessel trade, I like what Burke has done (my feelings about Kessel are this- he doesn't have (and needs) a quality centreman to get him the puck, and he seems very uncomfortable playing in the fishbowl that is Toronto...it's why I thought a city like Nashville would have been a better fit).

If Kaberle waives his NTC and Burke can get a 1st round pick and a top-six forward for Kaberle...the train is back on the tracks.

Their forwards are still in a total state of disrepair.

  • no he has a plan, the draft picks this year are nowhere close to the level stamkos/tavares was last two years, kessel is much better than hall, phaneuf will be better than stajan hagman and white ever will be so who cares, we got rid of a bunch of proven losers for a cup winning 33 year old goalie and a 26 year old superstar defence, hes just having a bad year with brent sutter like most of his d men do.

  • We'll see how Phaneuf pans out, but I'm ecstatic that Toskala is gone! Though I am sad that Ian White was traded, he was my fav this year :(
