How do I install Windows XP onto a system already running Windows Vista?

My system is running Windows Vista, I want to install another hard drive and put Windows XP on it (Dual-booting). I know I can put both on the same PC, but everything I have read has Vista being put onto a XP system not the other way. Please help me

  • Off the top of my head i can not think of the precise details of how its done.

But more or less follow the vista onto XP tutorials as the installation process is pretty much the same.

Create i second partition (unless you have two hard drives in your computer, is that what you where saying in your question?) and install on the blank one. Not to tricky if your good with computers. Mildly tricky if you not.

Remember to back up important data first.

  • Vista has a new updated mechanism for booting which is very different that Windows XP. And when installing an older OS (like WinXP), it overrides the Vista boot engine and thus booting to Vista is gone. Here is an excerpt from one of the KB's: When you install an earlier version of the Windows operating system on a Windows Vista-based computer, Setup overwrites everything from the MBR, the boot sector, and the boot files. Therefore, the earlier version the Windows operating system loses forward compatibility with Windows Vista. But there seems to be solution. See the following KB article from microsoft

  • Get hold of a Windows XP Disk, and install it on the second harddrive.

Then download OSL2000 demo, and install that.

This is how I did it.

You will then need to find the XP drivers for your PC.

    Best of luck,
