Naruto is popular because it is fun to watch and there are lessons to learn. The characters are loveable, colorful and distinct. The plot is interesting. It makes people laugh and cry with the characters.
i havent read the manga but ive seen all the episodes that have come out and been english subbed so far and im totally in love with this show!
Why you ask? well i think that the story line/plot is absolutely amazing and the arts work on the characters is something you call art, the main character (which is obliviously Naruto, duhhh) has had some hardships and tough situations which makes the audiance/readers feel closer to him as they see the real Naruto, overall the story is beast and i dont know who wouldnt like a show about ninjas, powers, ancient beliefs, science fiction that is actually explained quite well in a scientific way
concluding; Naruto is a great show/manga that has come out AGES ago and is still popular today (for a reason ^) its has an amazing plot and understandable lovable characters and is really long so you can get enough of it
I hate it when people judge beforehand. They have never seen Naruto and they just describe it as childish and stupid. Yes the characters are childish and the show is a little kiddy, but the plot is great. Everything falls into place.
I can't speak for everyone of course, and Naruto like the other 'Big 3' (Bleach and One Piece) get a good amount of hate as well. Most people tend to hate it for it's popularity (like hipsters) and the large amount of fillers it has. I'm sure there's other reasons though. So whether you love it or hate it, you've at least heard of the show.
As to why so many seem to love it...it varies. I find that most people, including myself, have enjoyed it so much for the immense amount of characters it has and all of them are developed rather well. They are all unique and have different ways of fighting so there's really a character for everyone, whether they're good or bad. The fighting in this show is also very unique and different from other shows, though some will disagree...what I mean is, it's really the first that came out with a lot of new and fresh ideas for the shounen genre. I've personally liked that what the characters are able to do in combat always tends to get a pretty intelligent and often believable explantion, where as many other shows have characters doing super human moves like jumping 60 feet in the air, and no one knows how. For this show they explain it.
Also a lot of the fighting styles and moves come from concepts that actually exist, such as Chakra, jutsu, and even some symbols such as what appears during one characters attack (Neji's 8 trigrams 64 palms). So, I found it to be clever and it picked my brain alittle.
Aside from that, Naruto covers tons and tons of emotional and deep topics. Quite a few of the characters have troubled pasts and they all handle it differently because they are different people, this adds to the realism. What worked for one may not work for the other, and so on.
There tends to be at least something or someone in this show that you can relate to, and if not there's at least many other things you might enjoy. Even the antagonists I felt to be some of the deepest. What I mean is with a couple of them they might start out bad but after learning about them you at least understand them and why they're doing what they're doing. This I can respect because I hate the pointless villain who just wants to conquer the world. Sure the fillers might have this, but the actual story written by the author does not.
Hope that clears things out. There's tons of fanfics because I suppose there's always something new to write about since the show is still ongoing and is so long, and there's so many characters people love and what to include in a story.
Naruto is based off of ancient Japanese factoids. Susuno'o is the god of thunder in japanese folklore. Tsukinomi is a goddess of dreams. Amaterasu is the goddess of the sun. and all three of these are jutsu's itachi uchiha used. Also naruto means "Ramen." Izanagi ((Another sharingan based jutsu.)) is also a god. And lastly the sharingan was a sickness where ones eye would turn red and their pupils would split up. Although this was made up to scare children this sickness does not exist. with all these facts alot of people find ninja's and shinobi interesting.
Why? Who's wouldn't love Naruto? It's all about the ninjas. Kids, teens, even some adults like ninjas, powers, strength, fights... And Naruto is the main protogonist who's a ninja with a curse, and not to leave aside his tremendous strength.

Because it's a pretty interesting manga with good plot and cool characters.
Edit: Wow everyone has thumbs down, did the trolls or Naruto haters invade?
Because it has a good plot, which (almost) everyone can understand and has lovable characters - even if they aren't the good guys
Because children enjoy mediocre entertainment.
because people enjoy it
