I can tell you that most people frequently confuse emo with goth, infact i even heard one person claim that Goth copied Emo, which is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing ever to be said.
There are several subtle differences.
Emos listen to screamo music like "The Used"
They tend to wear dark eye make up
The cutesie dark skull and cross clothes you find at stores like Jay Jays
A pair of black Chucks are their favourite foot wear
Black Skinny leg jeans
People say that cutting is a part of the culture, but i can say, i had depression for two years and this resulted in me wearing a lot of dark clothing simply because of my change in mood, and i did cut myself because i was suicidal, but i want an emo. Cutting is not actually related to Emo, it is just a stereotype which ignorant people have placed on the group.
I think the type of people that tend to make the move to the Emo culture, are generally teenagers, people looking for a sense of identity that isnt really just one with the crowd, they often dont fit in with the mainstream "pop scene", but they are just ordinary people like anyone else.
It's an insecurity thing. They choose dark colors like black to appear dull and uninteresting; therefore, not attracting attention to themselves.
