I happen to own a t3i and yes it's an excellent camera, in fact a steal at $600. To really do dslr video well you'll want some accessories that make video life with a dslr much easier.
I contribute to my You Tube channel with various videos from around my area, please feel free to look.
Here's one I did not long ago with my t3i. I will give you an idea of the quality of this camera.

I just bought myself the same tennis racket that Andy Murray uses...I've never played tennis before but Andy uses the same racket and he's playing in the 'Open'...I'm hoping to be playing in it next year, i'm just getting ready by buying the racket, some nice shorts, T-shirts and trainers.
Sounds a bit off doesn't it.
fhotoace nails your question...I reckon that nowadays the DSLR can outperform camcorders on image quality, the camcorder is more convenient though and using a DSLR for video can be expensive when you start to add in accessories like sound recorders or additional external microphones...kids just look at the camera that their favourite 'You Tubers' use...they don't realise that some serious sound gear is used to get that crisp, clear sound quality.
Do yourself a favour and do a search on 'You Tube' for how to go about setting up your own channel...and then do some research on how to get decent sound when you are using a DSLR...you can achieve decent quality with a low budget....it's best to understand what your options are before you spend anything...you might end up with kit that gives you great video and garbage audio...and nobody wants to watch that.
When it comes to being behind the camera, I'm a camera whore. However, being in front of it? Very shy... most folks always ask me for recent pics and I so very rarely take them. heck. my web cam has only been on on this new laptop because I didn't know the settings. Since then? Once.... Now since I have not shot anyones' pic in a while.....and I've got tons of film...and some digital cameras....
