Is Type 2 Diabetes curable?
in Health
My sister got diabetes and the medicine is killing her. With exercise, healthy eating, and less stress will she be cured?

Diabetes is incurable.
But it can be managed. Managed means, by eating a low-carb diet, taking prescribed meds/insulin, having regular exercise, blood sugar can be maintained at normal levels, like a non-diabetic.
This is well-managed diabetes. It is not a cure.
A cure means that you could eat a huge high carb meal and two hours later, have normal blood sugar.
That's not going to happen.
But with strict management, there is no reason why a well-controlled diabetic should not live a long, healthy life.

If you are borderline diabetic, I am partially pregnant. Seriously, there is no such thing as borderline diabetic. What it means is that you have a glucose intolerance already, and that if you continue the way you are going, your pancreas is going to give up and then you will be officially diabetic. A glucose intolerance means that your body has a problem metabolizing carbohydrate. Now most people think that diabetes is about a sugar problem but it's much bigger than that. All carbohydrate turns to sugar in the blood. So diabetes is not just about sugar intolerance but about carbohydrate intolerance. All of the following are carbohydrates and turn to sugar in the blood: all grains (even wholegrains), all rice (even brown rice), potatoes, bread, cereal, corn, noodles, pasta. And sugar of course. That means that any crumb of carbohydrate you put into your mouth is going to upset your body, because your body has a problem metabolizing carbohydrate. There will be people who tell you that 'good' carbs like whole grains are OK, and you just need to watch the 'bad', 'simple', 'unrefined' carbs. But to a diabetic/anybody with a glucose intolerance, all carb is the same. All carb will raise your blood sugar. Carbohydrate to someone with a glucose intolerance is like nuts to someone with a nut allergy. Toxic. Of course nuts are healthy - but only if you are not allergic to them. It's exactly the same with carbs here. Each time you eat carbohydrate, you are making your pancreas work extra hard. The harder it works, the more likely it is that it will give up, sooner rather than later. So the obvious solution is to be kind to your pancreas by not making it have to work as hard. That means a low carbohydrate diet. Your doctor is not strictly correct in telling you that your condition will go away if you lose weight. It MIGHT go away or it might not. Type 2 diabetes is not caused by being overweight. If that were the case, all overweight people would have it. But only 1/3 of overweight people become diabetic. Why these 1/3 and not the other 2/3? Because these 1/3 have got diabetes genes. Don't forget also that 20% of Type 2 diabetics are normal weight. If they were not overweight but still got diabetes, what caused their diabetes? Not their weight! And losing weight is not going to make it go away. What the doctor should have said is that 280 pounds is not a healthy weight and that you would be much better off being at a more normal weight. But being at a normal weight might not do anything for your blood sugar.
Roy Roy,
Not cured, but they will help. If you search, you will find a plethora of advertisements exhorting you to buy their product or take their course(s) that will reverse diabetes. Unfortunately, your sister’s – or anybody else’s - diabetes cannot be cured, but the treatment aims to keep her blood glucose level as normal as possible and to control the symptoms to prevent health problems developing later in life. Treatment for diabetes aims to help people with the condition to control their blood glucose levels and minimise the risk of developing complications over time. As your sister is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, she will need to look after her health carefully for life. This may seem daunting, but her diabetes healthcare team can offer support and advice about all aspects of her treatment. Hospitals and Diabetic centres keep handbooks about this subject and if you/she require accurate information you/she would be advised to obtain that from the official source.

Generally, just treatable, not curable. Weight loss helps, if obesity is a problem. Dietary changes can help also. If her medicine is causing problems, she should talk to her Dr and switch meds; many choices.
I know that metiformin is hard on the stomach (I don't take it for type 2 though I take it for PCOS) but if she is new to the drug tell her her body will get used to it over time. also never take it on an emty stomach big mistake. in the begining I could hold anything down. and now I can handle anything:) sorry but there are other drug out there for diabetreics but for me metifromin is all there is
Diet is 80% of weight loss and obesity is the single largest contributor to Type 2 diabetes.
The good news is your sister can come off the medication if she will switch to a healthy lifestyle.
A good healthy diet high in fiber, lean meats, eggs, complex carbohydrates, whole grains, antioxidant foods, healthy beverages and low in added sugar and salt help people lose weight, gain weight, lower cholesterol, increase energy, improve brain function, lower blood pressure, reduce cancer risk and have a more positive lifestyle!
You need to eat a lot more food and a lot more fiber!
Diets that exclude foods from any food group are fad diets and do not lead to permanent weight loss or solve any other health issues.
First, try to kick your fiber intake to 40 grams of both soluble and insoluble fiber.
Whatever you do, get your fiber from your food, not from a jar.
Fruits and vegetables have good fiber in them.
Try a breakfast cereal with at least 20% of recommended daily allowance of fiber in it. They are usually low in sugar so there is a double benefit. Blueberries or raspberries on top add more fiber and antioxidants. But fresh or frozen, not the kind in syrup.
Raw nuts are a great source of fiber, healthy fats, and antioxidants. Avocados are the best.
Lots of beans, peas, and grains are high fiber. Whole grain breads. Fiber kicks up the metabolism so you actually burn more calories. These foods will give you more gas in the beginning but if eaten daily, the bacteria in the digestive tract will elevate lowering the gas output.
This will get you on the path for a healthy daily bowel movement. This helps clean the system and aids healthy digestion.
I know it goes against everything you've heard but eating lots of the right foods will actually help you lose weight!
Next, take a basic daily multivitamin. Don't look at your multivitamin as nutrition but more as an insurance policy. Think of it as filling in the gaps in your daily diet as opposed to a primary source of nutrients. If you are a woman, you may want a plus iron formula.
Last, you HAVE to drink lots of water to be healthy. But you can disguise it. Fill your glass all the way full with ice before pouring low sugar beverages. Try iced green tea with a splash of orange juice in it for sweet. More antioxidants. Add lemon juice to water for flavor. Slice up a cucumber and float it in pitcher of water. Gives it salty fresh taste. But you must drink up to 100 oz of water daily to help your body get rid of waste and the toxins it contains.
You must combine a healthy diet with exercise to multiply the benefit. Whether an hour a day in the weight room or just a 30 minute brisk walk every day, the added benefit of a regular exercise program really do increase and accelerate healthy weight loss.
Your sister has to establish a diet without processed foods. She can lose kidney function as well if she doesn't address it now.
Good luck.
No, her fat is killing her. If she loses weight she can get off the meds.
