  • let X = the area of the smaller rectangle

    X / 85 = 3 / 5

    X = (85)(3/5)

    X = 51

    The area of the smaller rectangle is 51 square feet.

    that's it! ;)

  • A / 85 = 3 / 5 by definition of ratio.

    A = 85 * (3/5) = 51 Multiply both sides by 85 and solve the expression.

  • 3:5 ratio ............... 85:?

    3/5 = 60% .......... so, the smaller one is 60% the larger

    I don't know how to respond to how you need this formatted but, I know that dividing 85 by 6 is 14.1666

    14.1666 (10%) times 10 (100%) is 142

    the larger one is 142 .... you should be able to check that by doing the 85:142 = 3:5 which does come out right .... 85/3 = 142/5
