Can you cremate a dog 2 months after burial?

My dog, 13 years old and a chihuahua mutt, was euthanized back in March due to a horrific cancer that ruined her completely. We didn't have the money at the time to do a cremation, so we buried her in the cardboard box that she was given to us in at the vet's.

It's been 2 months and I just have a horrible feeling about this burial. I keep having nightmares and I know cremation is something I wanted to do for her.

My question is... can I cremate her 2 months after the fact? How would decomposition look? She was buried about 2.5-3 feet under. Around how much would it be?

  • Just let her rest in peace! I dont' want to even think of how gross she could look with only a cardboard box for a coffin. I am sure I will get thumbdowned for this statement but those who do can stick their opinions up their butts because I dont' care and I WON'T look at their comments but here it does. Her sole is at rainbow bridge and she is happy now and would NOT want you having nightmares about her empty shell of a body. Just leave her be and stop worrying about it.

  • let the dead be....

  • Basic low end price for cremation is $150. At this point the box has deteriorated and the body is not in shape that you want to see. Just let her lie where she is and go back to the earth.

  • Sorry for recent loss, however, I doubt there is much to cremate any more, most likely she has mostly decomposed already. There are a lot of factors that determine how fast decomposition takes. Depends on temperature, humidity, in or out of the sun, how fat the dog was… (I’m assuming it’s not getting eaten by anything larger than carrion beetles and maggots).

Couple of weeks to be down to dry skin, some hair, and bones, on average, though generally they’ll disappear before that because something larger will dig and drag her off (or at least pieces of her). There's also a possibility that a predator may have scavenged and eaten her, depending on what type of animals are in your area.

Use one of many search engines available to you get more info on decomposition.

  • Im sure at this point, the body has decomposed enough that you wouldnt want to dig her up.

What youd find, is probably not what you want your last memory of your dog to be.

Leave her at rest. Maybe plant a little memorial garden at the burial site.

  • Depending on your climate, she could be already mostly decomposed. Cremation is not somehow better or more respectful than burial, and unless your location has a law against burying your pet in your yard, I would let her rest in peace where she is.

  • Only in Oklahoma, Arizona, and Florida.
