Environmental assessment?

Dear friends,

I want to know more about LEED and BREEAM methodology.

I want to know what are the system boundary of them

and if they should be apply before building a house or it is possible after it too?

  • The focus is on Energy and the Environment.

Use of local (within 500 miles) materials and manufacturing is encouraged.

Design and use of materials and strategies to reduce energy and water use are key,

While you could try after a building is completed it would be best to start as soon as possible in the design process. Some strategies, such as passive solar for lighting and heating, will need the building to be aligned with the path of the sun. Reducing heat island effect of the site and increasing water efficiency can be planed for in the design phase. Something like using rainwater runoff to flush toilets can reduce the amount of water that will be purchased over the life of the building. But it is more difficult (read expensive) to install after a building is built and inspected.
