Math problem: How to scale a rectangle to a specific area?

Example: I have a rectangle with a width of 15 cm and a height of 10cm so the area is 150 cm². How do I know the width and height of a rectangle width the same aspect ratio but - for example - with an area of 100 cm²?

Comments

  • 150 = 15 x 10

    100 = 15sqrt(2/3) x 10 sqrt(2/3) where 2/3 is the ratio of 100 cm^2 : 150 cm^2

  • ratio is 15: 10 ; ;3:2

    so let width =x height = y

    so x/y = 3/2 & xy = 100

    so 3/2y^2 = 100 or y = sqrt (200/3) = 8.1649 cm

    width x= 3/2x(8.1649) =12.247 cm

    so width = 12.247 & height= 8.1649 ans

  • 3:2 ratio

    12 cm x 8 cm = 96 cm.sq with the ratio still the same.. i..dont think you can land a 100 cm.sq with those ratios
