How do you do this d=rt problem?

If Janet runs at a speed of 5 mph and Paula leaves 10 minutes after Janet and runs at 6 mph how long will it take for Paula to catch up with Janet?

oh and the back of the book says the answer is 5/6 ... I just wanna know why

  • Let t1 = the time it takes Paula to catch up with Janet

    They will run the same distance so d1 = d2 (1 = Paula, 2= Janet)

    r1t1 = r2t2

    t2 = t1 + 1/6 (10 minutes = 1/6 hour)

    6t1 = 5(t1 + 1/6)

    6t1 = 5t1 + 5/6

    t1 = 5/6

    5/6 hours is the answer =50 minutes

  • notice its 10 min. notice mph deals with hour. covert 10 min into hour by division of 60. then plug that in t for d=rt. now, janet has a head start of 10 min, so. (10/60)(5) = 5/6 miles; thats how far she ran in 10 min. now, we have (5/6) miles + 5x = 6x. thus, x= 5/6 = 50/60 hr = 50 min.

    10=5x6

    10= 30

    30-10= 20
