Oldskool rap: Do you remember...?
Back in the day rap/hip hop was about telling the story of what really happens in the hood and the lives they led, wanting better lives, and the struggles they overcame, but it didn't glorify the negative crap. Rap now is so commercial. Bling this, bentley that, hoes over here, etc. I'm so sick of the youth of today always trying to follow the new rap scene and get the bling and money without the work that comes behind it. What do you think?

I think there is still positive rap but you just have to search through all the unwanted commercial stuff. Kanye West, Common, The Roots, just to name a few, they are current artist who have positive vibes.
But I feel your point, Poor Righteous Teachers, YZ, Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, KRS-One, all these old school types had positive messages.
Remember this one:
Artist: Grandmaster Flash
Album: The Message
Title: The Message
(Sugarhill records 1982)
Broken glass everywhere
People pi$$ing on the stairs, you know they just
Don't care
I can't take the smell, i can't take the noise
Got no money to move out, i guess i got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkie's in the alley with a baseball bat
I tried to get away, but i couldn't get far
Cause the man with the tow-truck repossessed my car
Chorus:
Don't push me, cause i'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to loose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How i keep from going under
Never been a rap fan And I'm 35. So I've seen it since it started. I would agree with the status of Rap music today. That and the rise of videos have made it all about the bling bling booty show.
OMG ya I remember back in the days, I was born in 77 so my rap was tight. Salt N Pepa was one of my favorites. I really miss that music. The sad thing about it is that with the music now a days even the little kids sing them. I have 3 nephew whos age range is from 5-10 and they sing these stupid song and call themselves pimps and thugs WHAT THE HELL-I FEEL LIKE KILLING MY SISTER FOR LETTING HEAR THIS. Parents please do not let young children listen to this
I agree. When I was in high school, I loved rap and I still love old school rap. I cannot stand rap these days. It's awful. The only group/rapper I like is Outkast. I hope the negative rap dies out before my son gets old enough to listen to it.
I was just recently expressing my thoughts on this with some people and I agree. Some of the "popular" songs they've come out with now are totally rediculous! I just heard something on the radio the other night about ' how heavy is this chain around my neck' or something like that. I really didn't listen to it cuz it sounded like one of those they just decided to make because that was the one thought that ran through their mind. Now there's a whole song about it. :(p
I agree!
Bring back Heavy D, Slick Rick, Roxanne,L.L., Timex Social,Run DMC...you get the picture-all the FUN stuff. I get sick of hearing all this new crap, too. Whatever happened to good upbeat rap?
It's all about killing, being killed, who's got the biggest gun or the most dope.
What a way to raise our kids.
in a way i agree because it is tru that is what rap has come to... and oldskool is awsome!
but ina way.... i dont because times do change.... and well this is the new stuff
personaly i believe that if the current STARZ would change it, it could go back to what it was, but then again... not to sure if they are going to do that.....
good question though!!!
c-ya
