Do I have a confidence problem?
Hello everyone, I have been living in China for 18 months teaching English. When I first came to China I had no problems with anyone and very open to talk to others and confident. I have always been confident before I lived in China. I worked in sales and loved it and I had my own weight loss business where I went out on the street and got my own customers and did well at it.
Here are a few of my problems I have now after living in china:
1.) I don't want to talk to anyone anymore.
2.) I just want to do my work and then go home and be alone.
Other problems and why I dont want to talk to others.
All of these have to do with Chinese people.
Before I say my problems I have with Chinese people, I want to say that they are very nice and friendly and always helpful. They do their best to help and care others.
MY problems with them are:
1.) they always say Culture is a problem between us and give up on foreigners
2.) They always say language is a problem and give up. Yes its a little problem but they dont even try, even if they speak great English they say this.
3.) They always come up to me everywhere in China, not boys very much but mostly young 20's year old girls and ask if they can make friends with me, Many have boyfriends and then I ask why you want to be friends with me, they say I think we can communicate and I can improve my spoken English.
So these are my reasons I dont want to talk to them,
They just use foreigners for english
they always say culture is a problem and I have changed my mind on most of their ideas to fit in in china.
They always say language is a problme but they dont mean english/chinese, Chinese dont give straight answers. Ex: maybe means No , Yes means No in china sometimes, so us Americans are very straight forward with out answers but they are not because they dont want others to lose face.
So do you have any advice or help and do I have a confidence problem?
I will rate best answer.
Thanks

I GUESS YOU ARE VERY MUCH SERIOUS WITH YOUR WORK . NO TIME FOR RELAXATION . YOU NEED A SPACE TO RELAX YOUR MIND ONCE IN AWHILE . , I THINK YOU ARE GETTING BORED OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING EVERYDAY . I SUGGEST YOU TO FIND TIME TO EXPERIENCE ACTIVITIES WHICH IS NOT USUALLY DONE EVERYDAY .
i think you need to leave china and go back to america... you seem to be like an alien and a fish out of water. chinese culture is so very different to the western world. clearly its not making you very happy to live there at the moment.... have you had a break and been back home in the last 18 months at all? maybe you can have a break and then resume your teaching? the other option is to embrace THEIR culture more... throw yourself into the chinese way of life... learn some chinese and start of get more involved in their culture and traditions. learn what you can from there instead of just being like the arrogant american there to teach them, learn from them!
