Carbene is an unstable species that can be trapped in solid noble gas matrices (low T) by UV irradiation of diazomethane (CH2N2) [I am going from memory here]. Applying VSEPR it should be an AX2E system H2C: 2sp^2(ââ)2pz(0) V shaped with a lone pair so polar. Studies clearly show however that the ground state is a triplet state: 2sp^2(â)2pz(â) but nevertheless it would still be polar because it is asymmetric.
Comments
considering that "CH2" would have a -2 charge and 2 unshared electron pairs, it would be polar if it existed.
